St.Petersburg is an administrative centre of the North-West federal district, which includes 11 subjects of the Russian Federation: the Republic of Karelia, the Republic of Komi, Arkhangelsk region, Vologda region, Kaliningrad region, Leningrad region, Murmansk region, Novgorod region, Pskov region, Nenets autonomous district.

St. Petersburg is well ahead of the other regions of North-West Federal Region by the basic indices of social and economic development, especially in civil construction and trade.

St.Petersburg is one of the main cultural, historical and architectural centers of Russia. It was named in the honor of Peter the Great, who founded St. Petersburg in 1703. St. Petersburg, is world-known for its channels and bridges and is often called "Northern Venice".

Over the last years St. Petersburg made serious progress in the improvement of the municipal laws, improvement of the city territory, strengthening of the city position as one of the large centers of the European Baltic region.

A lot has been done for the development of the transport complex, improvement of the industry structure, attracting tourists, and culture development. All these actions make the basis of the steady economic growth in the next years.

The city occupies favorable geopolitical position. This is the European gateway of Russia, it's a strategic center closest to the European Union countries. Through the North Sea St. Petersburg has an exit to the Atlantic ocean. Sea transport carries out export-import communications. One of the oldest in Russia St. Petersburg seaport provides transfer of various cargoes. After the reconstruction its capacity will increase on not less than one third.

The city also occupies favorable position on airlines. Airport "Pulkovo" carries out passenger and freight traffic in all airports of Russia and foreign countries. Construction of new, more powerful airport is planned.

12 railways depart from St.Petersburg. Roads are connected by the ring line, allowing to provide the admission of transit cargoes, passing the city. Eleven highways depart from the city (to Moscow, Kiev, Murmansk, Vyborg, Primorsk, etc.) They are connected by a semi-ring highway.
