About SPb CCI > Palace halls of Baryatinskiye’s Mansion

Since 1988, Saint-Petersburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry is located at the address: 46-48 Tchaikovskogo ul. in the mansion of the Grand Duchess Olga Aleksandrovna Romanova, the younger sister of Nicholas II. Formerly the mansion built to the design by architect G.A. Bosse belonged to the princely family of Baryatinskiye throwing back to the Ryurikovichi. Then Nicholas II presented it to his younger sister. During several decades, since 1837, the palace was being built and rebuilt and by 1880 had acquired such compositional appearance that we can see it today.

After 1917 numerous organisations have been placed in the building, and by 1988 by the moment of move of the Saint-Petersburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry into the building a great part of interiors has been lost.

Systematic restoration of palace halls, which was conducted by the Chamber, began in 1989. At the present time the main building of the palace with an suite of magnificent halls and rooms such as Theatre Hall, Front Dining Room, Oak Reception Room are of artistic value. In the Theatre Hall, the decorative modelling of walls and doors has been renewed, the colour solution has been revived, the fire-place and the mirror frame pattern has been restored.

Business meetings, presentation, conferences, workshops, exhibitions of domestic and foreign firms are conducted in palace halls. By the Order of the President of the Russian Federation dated 20th February 1995, the palace named “Baryatinskiye’s Mansion” has been included into the list of object of historical and cultural heritage of federal significance.

Baryatinskye mansion is the XIXth century name of the building where the St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce and Indus-try is now located. It was built and rebuilt from 1837 till 1880 for the Baryatinskye princely family, which was famous at that time.

Baryatinskye is an old princely family of Russia whose roots can be traced back to the sons of Ruric. At various times, mem-bers of this family served as Ambassadors in countries of Europe and Asia and were renowned military commanders.

Built by a project of architect G.A. Bosse, by 1880 the magnificent palace obtained the composition look that we see today: a solemn extended facade in the second rococo style, an enfilade of gala rooms on the first floor along Chaykovsky (formerly Sergiyevskaya) street and two enfilades in the east and west transversal buildings.  The three-storey rizalites (extensions) give the palace a romantic look as they protrude above the main part. There is a driving arc on the central axis of each side building.

The central part, which was built first, is a two-storey building with a clear composition centre, a rizalite with three window axes. On the second floor there are three high windows with a half-circular end made as an arcade.

After 1917, the building was home to many organizations. In 1988, when the St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce and Indus-try moved in, most interiors were lost, fragments of decorative ceiling molding in the Theatre Hall and Gala Dining Room were destroyed, and carved wooden door and window panels were covered with many layers of black oil paint. Furniture, mir-rors, lamps and chandeliers were lost too.

Systematic restoration of the palace halls started in 1989.

At present, the main building of the palace with its enfilade of magnificent halls and rooms is an artistic value.
